I can’t emphasise the importance of professional management and promotion any better than this description by CDBaby.net:

Was 10%, now 90%

It used to be that, as a musician, only 10% of your career was up to you. “Getting discovered” was about all you could do. A few gatekeepers controlled ALL outlets. You had to impress one of these magic few people to be allowed to present your music to the world. (Even then, they assigned you a manager, stylist, producer, band, etc.)

As of the last few years, now 90% of your career is up to you. You have all the tools to make it happen.

Record labels aren’t guessing anymore. They’re only signing artists that have made a success on their own. As Alan Elliott* says, “A record label used to be able to look at a tree and say, ‘That would make a great table.’ Now all they can do is take a finished table and sell it at Wal-Mart.”

You have to make a great recording, a great show, a great image. You have to come up with a plan and make it happen, too. You have to make thousands of people want your music so much they pay good money for it. You have to make things happen on your own. Even if a record label puts it in the stores for you, it’s still up to your own hard work to go make people buy it.

The only thing stopping you from great success is yourself. This is both scary and exciting. At least you’re in control.

You have a product and you need to sell it. Product marketing is something I know a lot about (about me). As part of my service I plan and execute on the following all day, everyday:

  • gigs continue to be the most effective promotional tool to build your fan (‘customer’) base and offers the best opportunity to sell CD’s and merchandise, so I will
o book gigs, gigs, and more gigs across Devon
o book gigs beyond Devon – expand your fan base across the country
    o secure relevent support slots
o arrange ‘gig-swaps’ with similar bands around the country
  • clearly define the product (‘who you are’)
  • create effective promo and press packages
  • organise PR activities
  • secure radio slots & live sessions
  • develop, maintain and market your web presences (you need at least 3,000 Myspace fans to even be considered viable by a small label – Violent Soho are one of the hottest unsigned acts right now and have over 13,000 fans and over 100 plays a day on their Myspace page)
  • promotion to relevent independent labels when ready – you only get one shot and most bands blow it by not being a compelling business proposition.
  • and a thousand ‘little tricks’ we use to ensure exposure – such as the choice of photo for the press pack to ensure they’ll want to use it because it’s ‘different’ or ‘topical’.

    The Iconyx

Formed in 2007 at South Devon College while studying music, the band has rocked venues and won fans throughout Torbay. Their much-lauded demo was recorded at the infamous Sawmills Studio on the river Fowey, Cornwall where seminal albums such as 'Definitely Maybe' by Oasis, 'Up all Night' by Razorlight and of course 'Origin Of Symmetry' by Muse were also recorded. This year (2009) the boys are gaining more experience and growing their fan-base by playing unfamiliar venues across the region. The plan next year is to start on the well-trodden path around the UK live music scene. Signing to Fresh Music Management has enabled the band to spend a lot more time recording while raising their profile, creating a professional promo-pack and selling more merchandise.
