Appalachia – Fusion String Band

Appalachia is a perfect blend of strings, voices and musical styles. In concert they offer up their own inspired take on American roots music, mixing blues, country, jazz, ragtime, bluegrass and unique originals into a potent brew that will move you…and make you move!
Appalachia’s mission is “To make you good folks smile”

Appalachia combine blues, bluegrass, and American roots music, based on tight 4 part harmonies and strong, rhythmic arrangements to provide a real foot-stomping, feel-good sound. They are a four-piece band (guitars, banjo, mandolin, double bass and vocals), and have created a real stir, making appearances at art centres, clubs, events and festivals, appearing on the main stages of this year’s Priddy Folk and Cornish Bluegrass festivals.

Band members James Slater, Richard Burley, Danny Ward and Douglas Hamilton (Doug is from Wisconsin USA), met on the Southwest England acoustic circuit and discovered to their delight that they created something really special when they played together. They are all compelling singer songwriters and seasoned instrumentalists in their own right but as Appalachia, they work together to deliver finely crafted four-part harmonies and a repertoire which draws on guitar, slide, dobro, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, harmonica, and double bass. James’s original arrangements and anchored rhythm guitar provide a strong backbone for Danny’s accomplished ragtime/blues picking on guitar and banjo and Richard’s unique style of jazz and blues influenced guitar and mandolin, while Doug anchors it all down with his melodic and inventive technique on bass fiddle and electric bass (he also occasionally dons a guitar to deliver one of his witty and unique songs).

Recently they launched their first CD/DVD together, Appalachia Live! At the American Museum, Bath, to great acclaim from a capacity audience.
