Traditional Irish Music Summer School
09 Aug - 13 Aug | £90.00
Venue TBC
The first Bath Folk festival Irish summer school will be held this summer in Bath.
This will be an opportunity for those that haven’t played Irish music before to get started and those that already play to further their understanding and Skill.
The following intstruments will be taught across the week long course: Fiddle, Wooden Flute, DADGAD Guitar, Celtic Harp, Traditonal Irish singing
As the classes are centred on learning tunes by ear, they are aimed at musicians who have at least a little musical experience. Musicians will be expected to be able to at least be able to have a basic grasp of their instruments. They should be able to make a sound on their instruments and know their basic scales (and chords in DADGAD for guitar) so that the tutors won’t be using up all their time on this. Other than this no other requirements are necessary.
The classes will be divided into different difficulty levels so there will be a provision for musicians that aren’t too confident and musicians with little or no experience of traditional Irish music will be welcome.
Musicians do not need to be able to read music to participate in the classes but will need their own instruments and it’s advised that they also bring a recording device, a pen and paper to get the most out of the classes.
All ages are welcome and the classes will be mixed ages (Adults and Children). Generally this seems to work better at summer schools in Ireland as the different age groups also learn a lot from each other. It is considered a very important part of the tradition in Ireland that all the Generations play together. Older musicians and Younger musicians are generally treated with an equal level of respect.
All of our tutors have been selected, not only for their skill on each instrument but also for their communication and teaching skills.
