Live & Direct - WOMEX Event

Roots South West in partnership with WOMEX, the World Music Expo, present Live and Direct.

A one-day conference examining the world, folk and roots industry with a focus on concerts, touring and festivals.

You are invited to register for a major one day UK symposium to be held on Wednesday April 22nd this year. The programme will include a key-note speech followed by sessions, networking time, lunch and lunchtime and evening showcases.

The theme for the day is live music and will include representatives from the festival industry, touring consortia, promoters, agents, musicians and managers.

Conference Morning Agenda:

- Keynote speaker Martin Elbourne. “What specialist music can learn from the self-destruction of the rest of the industry”. An inspiring and controversial speaker at international music conferences Martin is main booker for the Glastonbury Festival and an instigator of the annual Great Escape music conference and showcase in Brighton.

- Gerald Seligman, General Director of WOMEX speaks on “The Industry Crisis: Has it finally hit the live scene? An international view”.

- Mark Ringwood from Roots Around the World on visa issues.

- Philip Butterworth from Arts Council England on Arts Council/AIM at WOMEX Copenhagen 2009.

Lunchtime Showcase: The Carravick Sisters

Conference Afternoon Agenda:

- News from the UK Bhangra scene from Ninder Johal of Nachural Records and Bhangra in Birmingham.

- Programming events from Guy Morley of the Big Chill and Brighton Festivals.

- Neil Darlinson, Chair of Music Beyond the Mainstream (MBM) on setting up consortiums and past, present and future plans

- An introduction to Black Routes, the new consortium for touring African and Caribbean music led by Serious, Joyful Noise, Punch, CMAT and Africa Oye.

- Focus group meeting for South West delegates on the aims and objectives of the Roots South West project led by Alan James

Evening Showcase:

Jackie Oates: Rising star of the British folk roots scene with two 2009 Radio 2 Folk Awards and a critically acclaimed new CD, “The Violet Hour”.

Colores De Mi Tierra: Music from the Caribbean coast of Colombia from two generations of the family of Toto La Momposina.
